Japanese car maker Honda Motor Co has introduced the first hybrid vehicle in India by launching its sedan Civic, equipped with a petrol engine and an electric battery. Honda said that the Civic Hybrid would cost Rs 21.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The import duty on a completely built unit (CBU) is 104 per cent. The company will import the CBU from Japan, where it produces the hybrid car for its global markets. However, it is also exploring alternatives through which it can import the engines and parts and bring the car as a semi-knocked down unit.
The Honda Civic Hybrid System features a 3-stage i-VTEC + IMA that employs Honda’s 1.3L i-VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) engine to provide three stages of valve timing (low-speed, high-speed, and cylinder idle mode), combined with a compact and efficient electric motor, Honda’s IMA (Integrated Motor Assist) system. Together with the CVT transmission, the system provides a company-claimed 47% enhanced fuel efficiency over a regular 1.8l Civic AT.
Banks and other financial institutions have been given a sneak preview of Maruti Suzuki India’s upcoming low-cost car (possibly to work out financing deals?), which is expected to get a price tag of Rs 1.2 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh. The car will not be a new car, but will be a stripped down version of the Maruti 800 hatchback.
The Maruti 800 is a rebadged Suzuki 800, and used to be India’s best selling car until it was overtaken by the newer Maruti Alto. The cheapest Maruti 800 is currently about Rs 0.75 lakh more expensive than the target price that Maruti has set for the new low cost stripped down version. The 5-door hatchback weighing around 650kg is powered by a 37 horsepower 796cc inline-3 engine engine, hence the 800 model name taken from an engine displacement rounded up to 800cc.
Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia has officially made available two additional variants of the Triton pick-up truck at its showrooms - the Mitsubishi Triton 3.2 4X4 Automatic and the Mitsubishi Triton Lite 2.5 4X2 Manual. This increases the Triton line-up to 4 different variants now, adding to the current offering of the 2.5 4×4 Automatic and the 2.5 4X4 Manual. You can spot the Triton 3.2 from the 2.5 liter versions by its different front bumper which has a little bumper protector, a chromed grille, and the different wheel design. Under the hood is the 4M41 3.2 liter inline-4 turbodiesel engine producing 160 PS at 3,500rpm and 343Nm of torque at 2,000rpm.
The Triton Lite is a 4X2 version of the Triton with smaller tyres. It rides on 15 inch wheels for one. The front bumper and grille is also rather basic and unpainted, with no foglamps. The much lower price of RM58,129.80 is due to the 2.5 liter engine being a more basic 8 valve SOHC version with no turbocharger. It puts out 75 PS at 4,200rpm and 149Nm of torque at 2,500rpm which is pretty much equivalent to a 1.6 liter gasoline engine’s torque. It is only available with a 5-speed manual.
Proton’s managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said that Proton prefers a foreign partner rather than a local one, as an established foreign automaker provided more value in terms of technology, marketing and other areas. During the great “find Proton a partner” saga that happened a few months ago, there were a few local and foreign possible partners for Proton. Local partners included the Naza Group, DRB-HICOM and Mofaz, while the possible foreign partners were PSA Peugoet Citroen, the Volkswagen group and General Motors. PSA came and went first, then it was Volkswagen and GM. The Volkswagen deal almost happened but got called off by the government at the very last minute. Apparently talks with GM are still ongoing, but these talks are said to be at extremely preliminary and exploratory stages.
Bosch has developed a new ECU which has an integrated ESP controller as well as all the necessary sensors such as yaw-rate measurement sensors and lateral acceleration sensors. This results in a more compact ESP setup as the ESP control box and controllers are no longer separate items that take up engine bay space. The new more compact system will allow ESP stability control to be offered in smaller cars with limited engine bay space, and the system’s first customer is Volkswagen, who has already implemented it in a producion car: the recently unveiled 4th gen SEAT Ibiza.
Suzuki has launched an all-new big-wheeled scooter - the 125cc Sixteen. Already renowned as the manufacturer behind the luxury ‘Burgman’ scooter range, the new Suzuki Sixteen is a first for the Japanese manufacturer, boasting true flat footboard step-thru practicalities with great manoeuvrability and ride quality thanks to its 16-inch wheels.
Following the announcement last month of a new colour scheme for the GSX-R1000, Suzuki GB has now added a further two colour options to their Supersport range, with a new limited white GSX1300R Hayabusa and an orange and black GSX-R750.
Available this month from any authorised Suzuki dealer, the two new additions offer greater choice for customers, brought about by consumer interest at the many outdoor events that Suzuki GB attend. Suzuki GB marketing manager, George Cheeseman commented, “With the white colour option already proving a very popular choice on other models, we believe that the limited run of 200 white Hayabusas will be extremely popular. Equally, with only 175 orange and black GSX-R750s available this will appeal more to customers looking for something unique.
