The new biofuel policy was announced this month which makes blending of 10 percent bio-fuel with petrol mandatory from the year 2012. It will be hiked to blending of 17 percent from the year 2017. All the major auto companies have taken a note of the same and have started to design new plans for their future launches that will run in alternative fuels.
Car companies in India are either planning to launch new variants or make changes to their existing models. Tata Motors, Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki are planning to launch variant of their existing models while General Motors and Nissan are planning to bring this technology from their existing markets.
This technology is applicable only on E10 and E20 engines which has left several car manufacturers wondering about the possible solution for their models. Presently, only Honda and General Motors have E10 compliant cars and General Motors is planning to introduce models with E20 engines as well.

BMW has unveiled the 7 Series Hybrid Concept Car, which will be shown for the first time at this year’s Paris motor show.The BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid combines the potential of BMW ActiveHybrid technology in the luxury saloon segment as part of the company’s EfficientDynamics innovation strategy.
The BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid comes with an intelligent combination of the V8 petrol engine with Twin Turbo and High Precision Injection, based on the power unit of the BMW 750i, and electric drive as a mild hybrid concept.
The concept car allows enhanced driving dynamics together with a reduction of fuel consumption and emissions by 15 per cent versus the same car running on a combustion engine only. Maximum output of the conventional engine in the regular production model is 300 kW, with peak torque of 600 Newton-metres.
Now this engine is combined with an electric motor fully integrated in the transmission housing, developing maximum output of 15 kW and peak torque of 210 Newton-metres. With the mild hybrid concept, the electric motor boosts the dynamic driving potential of the eight-cylinder petrol engine giving the BMW 7 Series even more dynamic acceleration.
Using Brake Energy Regeneration, the electric motor supplies electric power to the power-consuming items on board the car, minimising the direct conversion of fuel into electrical energy and maximising the drive power available for enhanced driving dynamics.
The compact electric motor integrated in the transmission housing replaces the conventional alternator driven by the engine as well as the starter. A high-performance lithium-ion battery integrated in the luggage compartment saves the energy generated and supplies power to the on-board network.

Honda has preponed the launch of its compact car Jazz by six months to increase its market share in the Indian market. Jazz , the smallest car from Honda’s bandwagon, will hit the Indian market in June-July next year and sport a specially designed 1.2 litre petrol engine for the Indian market.
The car will roll out from its Greater Noida factory while the critical components and sheet metal body panels will be manufactured at its Rs 600 crore new factory at Tapukara in Rajasthan, which was inaugurated on Friday.
This new facility will also emerge as Honda’s main manufacturing base and produce its future cars, including the second small car slated to hit India in the next four years.

Mahindra and Mahindra has launched a more powerful version of the Bolero MUV. The new variant - Bolero VLX CRDe - is powered by a 2.5-litre common-rail diesel engine that produces 97 horsepower and 255Nm of torque, thus making for improved drivability in the city as well as on the highway.
The Bolero VLX CRDe comes with power windows, AC, CD/MP3 player, keyless entry system, central locking and a two-year/100,000km warranty. The vehicle is priced at Rs 6.90 lakh, ex-showroom Jaipur.

Toyota has developed a rear window air bag to updgrade protection for back-seat passengers, the company said Tuesday. In the event of a rear-end collision, the air bag is ejected from the roof lining above the rear window and spreads like a curtain to protect the heads of the rear passengers, Toyota Motor Corp. said in a statement.
Toyota said the rear window curtain-shield air bag is the world’s first. The new safety gear will debut in the “iQ” compact four-seater vehicle, to be introduced later this year, Toyota said, adding that the air bag is expected to double the safety of rear passengers.
As part of an effort to attract buyers, Toyota has tried to make side air bags and shield air bags standard features, and has said it plans to increase efforts to develop safer vehicles and technologies that can ultimately eliminate traffic casualties.
