Auto Industry Updates and Reviews
The Mahindra-Renault Logan’s USP - lots of space at a rather low-ish price - hasn’t really taken off with too many car buyers in India, and the Logan has received quite a drubbing from cars like the Ford Fiesta and Maruti SX4. Now, it seems the only people who want to buy the Logan are taxi drivers in Mumbai, who are looking for a replacement for the age-old Premier Padmini.
According to a representative of the Mumbai Taxi Chalak Malak Sena, which has asked Mahindra-Renault to supply them with around 250 units of the Logan, discussions are on with the Mumbai RTO regarding whether or not the Logan can be used as black-and-yellow taxis in Mumbai. The company, which is okay with the car being used as a slightly more upmarket, airconditioned cab, is not willing to supply the Logan for basic taxi use.
On their part, the Mumbai taxi drivers’ association says cars like the Maruti SX4, Hyundai Accent and Ford Ikon are too expensive and/or not spacious enough, which is why they want to go with the Logan. They’ve even gone ahead and filed a PIL against Mahindra-Renault for refusing to supply the Logan for taxi usage. The Maharashtra state government is expected to take a decision and resolve the feud in the first week of January 2009.

With Premji Invest and IFCI Venture Funds having invested in his dream, former Maurti MD, Jagdish Khattar is now aiming at having 100 outlets of Carnation ready by end-2011. Envisioned as a multi-brand car service provider, each Carnation outlet will be equipped to service cars, will stock car accessories, tyres and batteries etc., and will also provide car insurance services. Each Carnation shoppe will have anywhere between 20-40 work bays, with each being capable of handling 3-4 vehicles per day.
Khattar, who aims to have around 25 Carnation outlets functioning by the end of next year, aims to set up the first one before March 2009. To start with, Carnation outlets will be set up in Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Amritsar, Noida and Kochi, followed by other towns and cities across the country.
With investments of Rs 80 crore from Premji Invest and Rs 28 crore from IFCI Venture Funds, Khattar should be well on track to achieving his targets with Carnation. As of now, car manufacturers are reportedly unwilling to cooperate (in terms of supplying spares) with Carnation, but Khattar is confident of overcoming that stumbling block in due course of time.
