Bajaj says it may launch small car on its own

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008 |

Whether or not Bajaj’s partnership with Renault-Nissan gets formalised, Bajaj is committed to its four-wheeler project, which will include a small, low-cost car and a mini commercial vehicle, with both vehicles sharing a common engine.

Of course, none of this means that the Bajaj-Renault- Nissan alliance for the ULC is off. ‘Everything for the proposed JV is absolutely on track and all our teams are working 24×7 on the ULC project,’ said a Renault spokesperson recently.

As per the MoU - which is yet to translate into a formal agreement - Renault-Nissan will handle the car’s styling and design, while Bajaj will handle the manufacturing and sales/marketing. The powertrain - engine, transmission and gearbox - is supposed to be jointly developed by all three companies.

Bajaj & KTM to make 3 vehicles

Friday, August 29th, 2008 |

Austrian two-wheeler maker KTM Power Sports is developing three intra-city transportation models - a trike, a budget car and a scooter - in a joint collaboration with Bajaj Auto. Bajaj, India’s second-largest motorcycle maker, owns 21 per cent stake in KTM.

All of the models will be marketed in developing countries and will have petrol, diesel and electric variants. KTM officials had earlier said that it was studying the possibilities of entering the small-car segment alongwith Bajaj.

Bajaj Auto, which is also one of world’s largest three-wheeler manufacturers, will bring its expertise in low-cost engineering to the table. The Pune-based company recently unveiled its indigenously developed ultra low-cost car LITE at the Auto Expo earlier this year.

When contacted, Rajiv Bajaj, managing director, Bajaj Auto, declined to offer any comments on the matter. There is, however, no confirmation if the low-cost car will make its way to India as Bajaj Auto has already signed an agreement with Renualt and Nissan to develop a ‘ultra low cost’ car for the Indian market, which will be retailed at $2,500-$3,000.

The KTM-Bajaj car will be a four-seater urban runabout, which is under KTM’s new ‘innovative urban transportation concept’. Such vehicles are cheap yet frugal and fun to drive. The scooter, however, will be made available in the Indian market and is already under development. A launch by 2010 launch is likely for the model.

Upgraded Pulsar 200?

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008 |

A updated version of the Bajaj Pulsar 200 is being tested around the outskirts of Pune. The bike was spotted with test plates by bikeindia. If you look closely you wont be able to find any difference compared to the regular Pulsar 200. Maybe Bajaj has tweaked the engine to extract more power to give the competition a run for their money. Or maybe Bajaj is going the FI route with the Pulsar 200.

Bajaj To Launch 2 New Bikes This Year

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 |

Bajaj Auto is planning to launch two new 125cc motorcycles in this quarter. With the festive season around the corner, Bajaj Auto is bullish about good sales figures this quarter and new models should provide the boost it needs.

One of the motorcycles expected to be launched during this quarter is the Bajaj XCD DTS-i Sprint. Showcased at the 2008 AutoExpo, XCD DTS-i Sprint is expected to be launched with a 4-valve 125cc 4st engine producing a respectable 12.5bhp. Second model would likely be positioned toward the bottom of the 125cc market in an attempt to entice more 100cc motorcycle owners to switch to the 125cc segment.

Bajaj-Renault-Nissan JV to build electric vehicles

Friday, July 18th, 2008 |

The Bajaj-Renault-Nissan alliance could extend beyond the ‘ultra low-cost car’ (ULC) to include a range of electric vehicles. Nissan-Renault boss Carlos Ghosn recently announced that he plans to start mass production of electric vehicles as part of his strategy to boost demand, which is now sluggish due to high fuel prices. According to sources in the vendor circuit, Nissan-Renault may look at its ULC alliance with Bajaj for affordable production of e-vehicles. When contacted, Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj refused to comment. If the Bajaj-Renault-Nissan alliance does get into e-vehicles, it will be one more segment, apart from the Nano, where the combine will have a face-off with the Tatas.

Bajaj Sparks Again - May Sue Royal Enfield This Time!

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008 |

Bajaj Auto is investigating whether or not, Royal Enfield Thunderbird Twinspark has infringed on Bajaj Auto’s patent for using twin spark plug technology in the low capacity motorcycles. Bajaj Auto said it was studying if Royal Enfield’s Thunderbird Twinspark 350cc motorcycle violated their patent on the twin-spark technology. It said if Enfield was found to have violated the patent, the company would take the matter to court.

Royal Enfield on its part said the engine displacement on the Thunderbird Twinspark is in the range of 350cc and above and Bajaj Auto’s patent only applies to motorcycles with 75-250cc motorcycles. It also said there were several other differences in construction of the engine and spark plugs.
