Ford Motor Company will launch 8 new vehicles in India by the middle of the decade. Speaking at the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Conference in New Delhi today, Joe Hinrichs, president of Ford Asia Pacific and Africa (APA), and Michael Boneham, president and managing director, Ford India, however did not reveal the names of the models. Ford will also export the Figo to 50 new markets including Mexico, North Africa and the Middle East from 2011.
Joe Hinrichs, president of Ford Asia Pacific and Africa (APA) -
We have big plans for India and for this region. As we have seen from the spectacular early success of the Ford Figo, more and more Indian consumers appreciate the fuel efficient, economical, high quality, safe, and fun-to-drive vehicles that Ford offers. This is part of our ‘better plan’ to bring more and more vehicles from our vast global portfolio to India and other markets in Asia Pacific and Africa.
By 2012, more than 70 percent of the Ford vehicles sold all over the world will be derived from 15 core platforms. Ford launched the Ford Figo during the first quarter of this year and within 25 weeks, it has sold more than 25,000 of them. The Figo is also exported to South Africa and was launched in Nepal earlier this month.

Ford has redefined the small car segment in India and the Figo has taken the market by storm. With over 21000 bookings at hand, Ford is starting a second shift at their Chennai plant to meet the growing demand. This demand also comes from the overseas markets and Ford has also started exporting the Figo to potential countries like South Africa. Besides the Figo, Ford is also exporting engines to Thailand from their base at Chennai.
“We have recently started exporting diesel and petrol engines to Thailand. The monthly demand there is around 3,000 units” Michael Boneham, MD, Ford India. With a 40 percent increase in the number of dealerships across India, Ford is firmly establishing itself into a league which is ruled by Maruti Suzuki. The company is also exploring venues outside India where they can launch the Figo.

Ford has got it absolutely right when it comes to impressing the small car buyer and the Ford Figo has been an outright success in the already overcrowded small car segment. Even the Maruti’s could not stop the Figo and Ford has managed to sell 16000 Figo’s since its launch 14 weeks ago. Thats about a little more than 163 cars per day, a feat in itself.
Ford has already delivered 16000 Figo’s and has more than 21000 bookings at hand. Ford is beefing up its production capabilities with another shift starting next month to meet the soaring demand. One of the reasons for Ford’s success is that the Figo is available in a diesel engine unlike the Chevrolet Beat, Hyundai i10 and Maruti WagonR & Estilo. Even the Nissan Micra, poised for a launch next month, will not be offering a diesel engine initially.

Ford India has finally struck a chord with the Indian buyers, their new entrant in the compact car segment – Figo is doing wonders for the company. The response has been so overwhelming that the company is not able to keep with the demands. To do so, company has decided to ramp up the production of its car by 30-40% at its Maraimalai Nagar Plant near Chennai and will be hiring 700 people to achieve this.
“We do need to ramp up production to cope with the increasing demand for Figo and so we are starting a second shift from the end of June at our Chennai plant. This will increase our production capacity of the small car by 30-40 per cent,” Ford India President and Managing Director Michael Boneham said.
Speaking about the sales report of the car, Boneham said, “We have sold 7,700 units of Figo during the first one month. This is the second biggest first month sale by our company ever in India. We need another two to three months to see how it settles down”. Boneham added, “Within the next three months we will hire another 600-700. Most of them will be diploma holders and fresh passouts and will be employed in the shop floor, but there will be some who will be qualified engineers and employed in the middle rung”. Ford India currently employees 3,00 employees in this plant.

Ford India has just revealed the shock prices for its eagerly awaited hatchback, the Ford Figo with the base petrol (Lxi) version being priced at a stunning Rs 3.49 lakh (ex-showrooom Delhi), rising up to Rs 4.42 lakh for the top-end (Titanium) variant. Similarly for the diesel version, the base variant starts at Rs 4.47 lakh, with the top-end variant rising to Rs 5.29 lakh. The Figo competes against the newly launched Chevrolet Beat, Volkswagen Polo and established Maruti Swift. While the entry level Beat is keenly priced at Rs. 3.42 lakh, the base Polo has a price tag of Rs. 4.42 lakh.
Ford is clearly going all out to grab B-segment buyers with this very competitive pricing for the Figo. In fact, the company was believed to have been waiting for the launch of its rival the Beat and Polo before finalising the prices for the Figo. Clearly, Ford is keen to establish its new hatch as the industry benchmark in terms of value for money.
