Tata Motors is now Second Largest Manufacturer

Sunday, July 4th, 2010 |

Maruti Suzuki dominates the Indian auto scene and Hyundai has been holding on to second place for sometime, but not anymore. Tata motors has overtaken Hyundai as the India’s second largest car maker and credit goes to the Tata Nano for this feat.

Tata’s new plant at Gujarat has started production of the Nano and the Nano has received more than 7000 bookings in June and Tata has recorded a growth of 63% in this month itself. Even though Tata edged Hyundai by a small margin, a single months figures cannot be taken for granted but we expect the Nano to keep Tata in front of Hyundai for the time to come.

Tata inaugurates Nano mother plant

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010 |

The world’s cheapest car, Tata Nano, is set to enter full swing production following the inauguration of Tata Motor’s manufacturing facility in Sanand. The Nano’s mother plant was inaugurated by Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi and Tata Group chairman, Ratan Tata. Spread over about 1,100 acres, the Sanand plant has been created at an investment of about Rs 2,000 crore. The new facility has the capacity to manufacture 2.5 lakh units annually, which can subsequently be increased to 5 lakh units per annum. Pilot commercial production of Nano at Sanand has already begun.

Speaking on the occasion, Modi said: “The revolution brought by Ford in the early 20th century with its small car is being replicated now by Ratan Tata with the Nano. Every middle-class family’s dream to own a car is being fulfilled at Sanand with the inauguration of the Nano plant, he added. “When I came here first on an industry visit invited by Gujarat Chief Minister, I was told that if the Nano plant is not in Gujarat, I will be a stupid.” “I am no longer stupid after investing on the plant in Gujarat,” Ratan Tata said.

The production at the Sanand plant begins almost two years after it was forced to shift the Nano’s manufacturing plant from West Bengal. The company had first chosen Singur for setting up the plant but had to pull out of the site in October 2008 following violent protests over land acquisition.

Tata Concludes Investigation Into Nano Incidents

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010 |

Tata Motors has undertaken a comprehensive investigation related to the cause of fire in two Tata Nanos. On the basis of the findings of the investigation, conducted by a 20-member internal team and an independent forensic expert, Tata Motors assures all customers that the Tata Nano is a safe car. The investigation reveals that the incidents in these two cars, which were being transported to or from dealers, were isolated instances and the reasons are unrelated. This further establishes the conclusion that the Tata Nano’s design is robust. The Mumbai incident in March 2010, approximately one-and-a-half hours after delivery to a customer, was found to have remnants of a foreign object on the hot exhaust system which most probably led to combustion.

In the incident of the second car in Gujarat’s Anand district in April 2010, which was being delivered to a dealership, there was evidence of a ruptured fuel line. The investigators’ conclusion that the Tata Nano is safe and robust is also visible in the problem free driving experience of thousands of owners since deliveries from July 2009. The company has, notwithstanding, decided that it will allay any concerns by owners by inspecting all cars with customers and, where necessary, add additional protection to ensure the car’s safety. Beginning May 24th, each owner will be individually contacted over the next few weeks to fix appointments for such inspections. These inspections would be provided free of cost to the customers. These inspections do not constitute a recall.
