All New Volkswagen Jetta Unvieled

Friday, June 18th, 2010 |

Here are the first images of the all new Volkswagen Jetta saloon. VW has re-engineered its Jetta saloon and the new model takes a gigantic leap forward – conceptually and in the style department. The new car model has undergone considerable amount of changes and according to VW, it now warrants status as a standalone model like the VW Tiguan. The saloon’s styling is based on the lines of the NCC coupe concept car that was shown at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Still based on the Golf platform, the Jetta sits on a wheelbase stretched by 70mm and is clothed in crisp new sheetmetal inspired by the NCC concept revealed in January. At 4644mm, the new Jetta is 90mm longer than before. The extended wheelbase will result in added comfort and improved overall legroom, helping the Jetta take on the fight with its competitors, the Skoda Laura and the Chevrolet Cruze. At the time of the unveiling the company has shared that ‘the new Jetta will no longer share any body components with the Golf and it will be a vehicle type that is just as independent as a CC or Tiguan.’

In Europe, the new Jetta will be launched with a wide range of engine options. However, in India, the saloon is more likely to be offered with a 1.4 TSI petrol and 1.6 TDI diesel engine options. The new longer and wider Jetta is has VW’s ‘design DNA’ helping it sharpen the car’s styling. At the front, the prominence of horizontal lines defines the design. The black radiator grille combines with the car’s trapezoidal headlights to form a styling unit. It also gets an added cooling air intake and a tray-shaped front spoiler that gives the car a sporty finish.

From the sides, you can notice that the styling characteristics that mark all new VWs launched in the past one year gets moulded into yet another interpretation of the ‘design DNA’. Compared to the outgoing model, the new Jetta has also grown in clarity and pre-eminence in its side profile. At the rear, harmonized surfaces and sporty shoulders dominate the look. The visually distinctive taillights are split into two sections, each side extending from the fender into the tailgate.

The interior has its own high-quality identity, but distinct from that of Golf’s. The rounded instruments are ideally arranged and the Jetta gets new steering wheel design with optional multi-functional keys on offer. The rear seats split 40/60 and folds, increasing the car’s versatility. The US spec model also gets six airbags, improving its safety quotient. VW plans to launch the new Jetta in India by March 2011.

Official Sketches of Volkswagen Vento Revealed

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 |

Volkswagen India has released the first sketch of its new Sedan, the Vento . The saloon is slated to hit the Indian roads later this year. The Vento is essentially the saloon version of the recently launched Polo and it shares a common platform with the hatchback. Specifically designed for India, the Vento will be tailored to the requirements of the Indian consumer and carry the Volkswagen DNA of German Engineering. The sedan will be manufactured in Volkswagen’s state of the art plant at Chakan, Pune.

Both the saloon (Vento) and the hatch (Polo) are similar upto the B-pillar, except for a different grille and lights to differentiate it from its hatchback sibling. The Vento’s rear section or third box is well integrated with the body. The wheelbase has also been extended by an estimated 50mm for better legroom. Headroom too will be better as the roof doesn’t taper down as sharply as in the hatch.

With its authentic and elegant design coupled with innovative features and driving dynamics, VW is hoping the Vento to set new benchmarks in its class and to act as a key brand pillar for the company to stimulate its growth in the country. The Vento will be in addition to Volkswagen’s already existing product line-up which includes the Polo, Passat, Jetta, Touareg and the new Beetle.

VW Confirms F1 Intentions

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 |

Volkswagen has confirmed it is eyeing a role in Formula One as an engine supplier, not as a team owner, if it enters the sport as expected from 2013. That is according to former grand prix driver Hans-Joachim Stuck, who is now VW’s motorsport representative. Stuck told German magazine Sport Bild, “it is clear that we are looking at Formula One,” but that VW is “waiting for the FIA’s decision in respect of the use of a world engine”.

VW was linked to buying into the Red Bull team a few years ago, but Stuck insisted any VW entry now would be as an engine supplier to multiple teams and not as a partner to a team in the same way Brawn has teamed up with Mercedes. Stuck has confirmed that VW would not have “[its] own team like Mercedes”.

VW’s motorsport chief Kris Nissen wants the sport to improve its image, drive down costs and improve its stability before the group commits itself to F1. This, Nissen believes, is the responsibility of the new FIA president Jean Todt and the exisiting teams. “Formula 1 is facing one of the most difficult situations it has had for many years,” said Nissen. “They need to handle that, and I really believe that Todt and the teams will do that. I think that for manufacturers to come back, or for new manufacturers to enter Formula 1, you need to have stability, you need to have a slightly different image, and you need to bring the costs down.”

F1 is expected to switch to turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engines mated to KERS from 2013, but the sport is also keen on improving the efficiency of the current 2.4-litre V8 units in the mean time.

Volkswagen India to ramp up Polo’s production

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 |

Volkswagen India said it will ramp up the output of its latest offering, compact car Volkswagen Polo in India to clear order backlog, which has now crossed 5,700 units within two months of launch. Volkswagen rolled out the Polo hatchback, priced between Rs. 4.34 and Rs 6.70 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), in March. It has sold 1,599 units so far, out of a total booking of 7,300 cars. Currently it has a waiting period of up to four months.

“We are gradually ramping up production, but not rapidly as, we do not want to compromise on the quality. About 50 per cent of the components are localised, so we have to be very careful while increasing the output,”Volkswagen Group Sales India Board Member Neeraj Garg told. Volkswagen has recently unveiled the new 1.2TDI 3 cylinder engine which will have an power out of 74 Ps. The Diesel Polo will be launched in May and this could only increase the waiting period if the car further. Unveiled at the Auto Expo in January, Polo is pitted against Maruti Suzuki’s Swift and Ritz, Hyundai’s i10 and i20, and Honda’s Jazz.

Volkswagen To Launch Vento In July

Monday, April 26th, 2010 |

The upcoming Volkswagen Polo sedan will be called the Vento and will be launched in July priced at Rs. 7-9 lakhs. The Vento is an important model for VW and the company hopes to sell 25,000 units every year once production is on full throttle. The Vento (code: VW251) shares a common platform with the Polo and are similar upto the B-pillar, except for a different grille and lights to differentiate it from its hatchback sibling. The Vento’s has been extended by an roughly 50mm for better legroom at the rear. Headroom too will be better as the roof doesn’t taper down as sharply as in the hatch. Boot space is expected to be in the region of 500 litres with a split seat option on offer. Equipment levels are expected to be higher than in the Polo and the top-of-the-line version could get some of the features from the Jetta.

The Vento will initially get a petrol and a diesel engine displacing 1.6 liters and producing 105bhp each. However, the diesel boasts of a mind blowing 25.5kgm of torque to the petrol motor’s 15.8kgm. Like in the Jetta, the petrol motor in the Vento is a naturally aspirated unit but it’s more advanced. While the Jetta’s 1.6 motor had two valves per cylinder driven off a single cam, the Vento has a four-valve head and double overhead camshafts. VW is likely to introduce the same engine in the Indian Polo after the Vento is launched. The 1.6 common-rail diesel is brand new and comes from the same engine family as the 1.2 turbo-diesel that powers the Polo and the bigger 2-litre diesel under the hood of the Jetta. Both the petrol and diesel will come with five-speed manual transmissions initially but a DSG ‘box in the top-end diesel maybe introduced at a later stage.
