BMW 5 Series outsells 3 Series in May

A clear cut sales trend has developed within the BMW range sold in India. The bigger, more expensive 5-Series saloon range has outsold the 3-Series saloon range 93 units to 44 in the month of May.

The popularity of the 520d is a clear factor in this remarkable sales trend. At a price of Rs 43.23 lakh (on-road Mumbai), the 520d is just Rs 9 lakh more expensive than a 320d (and just 7 lakh more than a 320d Highline).

The car is also Rs 2 lakh cheaper than rival Mercedes-Benz’s E220 CDi and comes with a bigger equipment list too. A lighter kerb weight than other 5-Series cars and a smaller engine makes the car comparitively less thirsty too and a better car to live with.

Even before the launch of the 520d late last year, the BMW 5-Series had held more than a 50 percent market share in its segment. Mercedes’ new E-Class (expected sometime early next year) is expected to challenge BMW’s dominance when it hits Indian shores.
