Maruti Suzuki to launch A-Star by month-end

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Maruti Suzuki India is expected to launch its new small car - the A-Star - by the end of this month. But, unlike in Europe, where the car will replace the current Alto and take over that nameplate, in India, Maruti will continue to retain all of its current small car models.

Speaking to a selection of Indian mediapersons at the sidelines of the Paris Motor Show on Thursday, Mr Toshihiro Suzuki, Board Member and Senior Managing Executive Officer, Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan said that the company will continue to market all of its current small cars that are in its portfolio in India, including the Alto, Wagon-R and Zen Estilo.

He said that there are a variety of customers with varied expectations and having a wide range of cars enables the company to cater to the market’s various price segments. Mr Suzuki also mentioned that the company will position the new A-Star just below the Suzuki Swift.

Speaking about the future of the Maruti 800, he said that it would be difficult to comment concretely on the future strategy of the company for its entry-level small car.

Maruti Suzuki to boost exports with the A-Star hatchback

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

With the launch of its new hatchback (which would be based on the A-Star concept) just two months away from now, Maruti Suzuki is preparing to boost sales in the domestic market and also increasing its focus on exports. Maruti hopes to be exporting 200,000 cars per annum by 2010-11.

‘We had exported about 53,000 cars in 2007-08, and that was the highest ever so far. Now, we have set the target to export 200,000 cars annually by 2010-11. We see major sales coming from A-Star, which will be manufactured exclusively by Maruti for Suzuki Motors Corporation’s (SMC) global markets. It will mainly be exported to Europe and other markets. Maruti wants to become SMC’s exclusive base to manufacture small cars for its global markets,’ says Shinzo Nakanishi, MD, Maruti Suzuki India.

In the meanwhile, there are reports of Maruti having to deal with a large backlog of bookings for its compact sedan, the Swift Dzire . Since the car was launched in March this year, Maruti has delivered 22,000 units of the Dzire, while a backlog of more than 20,000 bookings remains to be served.
