Auto Industry Updates and Reviews
Skoda India is planning to launch four new models by mid 2009. It will introduce new variants of its existing models in India. This means that Indian customers will witness the launch of a new Skoda Laura , Skoda Superb, Skoda Roomster and the new Skoda Fabia Combi . “Hundred per cent in the plan is the launch of the Superb successor in the first quarter and Laura successor in the middle of 2009.
We will showcase the new Superb in November,” Mr Thomas Kuehl, Board Member (Sales & Marketing), Skoda Auto said. We hope people will prefer the five-seater Fabia Combi with a huge space to drive outside the city, to go to the countryside,” he added.
Skoda Fabia Combi was recently exhibited at the Lakme India Fashion Week in Delhi. It was widely appreciated by the media as well as the customers at the Fashion festival. The car is not due for an immediate launch but is a part of Skoda’s brand building exercise in India.
However, Skoda is a little apprehensive about the mass response from the Indian customers about Skoda Fabia Combi as it is a station wagon. Station wagons are not largely accepted by Indian customers. “It is difficult to predict the market for Fabia Combi because it is not a preferred body style in the market. We start with the niche,” said Kuehl.

GM India has launched a new variant of the Chevrolet Aveo U-VA as a part of its centenary year celebrations. The car unveiled by Chevvy’s brand ambassador Saif Ali Khan. “The new Chevrolet U-VA brings superlative value and additional safety, security and luxury to our customers,” said GM India vice president P Balendran at the launch. “We will continue to roll out new products and also revitalise our existing line-up to create new excitement in the market,” he added.
The exterior and interiors styling remains exactly the same but GM have added a few new feature to make the overall deal sweeter. The new Aveo U-VA comes with additional features such as driver side air bag, anti lock braking, keyless entry with burglar alarm, leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, split folding rear seats and deco moulding on the instrument panel and door trims.
Ford is going to launch the refreshed in November. Company sources have also revealed that the new Ikon will get the 1.4 litre TDCi DuraTorq engine which has proven it’s merits in the Fiesta . With the diesel option the Ikon is likely to see a sales spurt and helping matters will be it’s new ‘Josh’ appeal thanks to design modifications.
It will now feature new large muscular front bumper with a massive air dam and nicely integrated fog lamps. The headlights are sharper and have a kink at the bottom to add flair. The tailights and rear bumper will be new too giving the Ikon a sporty look. Interiors are expected to be spruced up and made more upmarket this time around. The dashboard and other bits are likely to be carried over though.
Skoda Auto has unveiled the facelifted Octavia (sold as the Laura in India) at the ongoing Paris Motor Show. ‘The Octavia has always had a special position among Skoda vehicles. It is our most successful model, very popular worldwide. Now it has gone through a complete transformation that is apparent in the new interior and exterior, as well as the applied technology,’ says Dr Eckhard Scholz, the Board Member responsible for technological development.
Key enhancements on the revamped Skoda Octavia/Laura include newly shaped headlamps and radiator grille, and a one-piece bumper, at the front. New taillamp covers, and a dynamic bumper with integrated cat eyes, freshen up the rear end styling.
The car’s interiors have also been redone, with revised audio and navigation systems, new steering wheel, redesigned air-conditioning controls, adaptive xenon headlamps and new, more upmarket upholstery fabrics.
