Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Honda has closed its offer for its car Honda Civic Hybrid to be available at Rs. 13.36 lakh. The company received an overwhelming response to its scheme in India that was announced on November 12, 2008. It received more than 1100 inquiries in just 4 days and 235 confirmed bookings. The cars planned for the scheme have already been allocated against the confirmed bookings and the company will make deliveries by the end of November.

“The huge interest in the Civic Hybrid shows that Indian customer is ready to adopt such new environment friendly technologies. The introduction of the special price was our effort to promote this technology. We are very hopeful that with Government’s support for these environment friendly vehicles, a lot more customers would be able to experience this technology in future,” said Mr Jnaneswar Sen, Vice President, Honda Siel Cars India.

Honda Civic Hybrid for Rs.13.36 lakh

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Honda India has cut the price of Civic Hybrid by a whopping 8 lakh rupees!! The company looks forward to boost the sales of its environmentally friendly car in the growing unfriendly automobile environment. The price cut comes with immediate effect and becomes historic as the sharpest price cut in the Indian automobile history.

The launch price of the car was Rs. 21.5 lakh but the new price after the price cut is Rs. 13.36 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The hybrid model from Honda had made a lot of customers interested in the car. However, the car was imported as a completely built unit and attracted heavy import duty.

Honda, which only sold 60 units of the Civic Hybrid in India over the last five months, sold 98 units of the car in one single day, immediately after the price cut was announced. Of course, one can only imagine the plight of those poor souls who bought the very same car at its earlier price of Rs 21.5 lakhs!!

Honda’s hybrid plans

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Toyota, of course, is the world leader at selling hybrids. Honda has never liked that, not given that Honda actually beat Toyota to market in North America with its two-door hybrid. It did not sell well and neither have the Accord Hybrid - discontinued - and the Civic Hybrid.

So far, Honda’s hybrid efforts have been a bit embarrassing - especially so for a company that prides itself on being a so-called engine company dominated by the smartest of engineers.

Honda officials have led me to believe that the Insight will be highly affordable, selling in the $22,000-range or so in Canada. At that price, Honda is expecting to sell 100,000 or more Insights a year - perhaps more. Ten thousand of those might be sold in Canada.

Except Honda won’t be alone in challenging Toyota and that means those sales numbers might be a stretch. General Motors already sells a slew of different hybrids, Ford has the Escape Hybrid and more like it coming in a few months, Nissan is pushing ahead, Chrysler has a wide-ranging electric car program in the works and on and on.

Honda’s Hybrid Will Take On Prius

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Global auto makers are rushing to challenge the dominance of Toyota Motor Corp.’s Prius hybrid with a slew of ecofriendly vehicles. But Honda Motor Co. is likely to pose the most formidable threat to Toyota when it unveils its new Insight hybrid car Thursday at the Paris Auto Show.

Honda is betting that the five-passenger hatchback, set to go on sale next spring, will steal away Prius buyers by delivering greenness for fewer greenbacks. Honda has yet to disclose many details about the car or its cost.

Volvo to introduce fourth-generation hybrid solution for commercial vehicles

Saturday, September 20th, 2008

The Volvo Group has announced the introduction of its fourth-generation hybrid solution for buses, trucks and construction equipment. The Swedish company has been testing hybrid solutions for commercial vehicles since the 1980s, and unveiled the first commercially viable hybrid solution for CVs in 2006.

Volvo’s four-generation hybrid solution for commercial vehicles is based on the I-SAM (integrated starter, alternator motor) concept, which allows an electric motor and a diesel engine to work in parallel. Compared with older series hybrids, I-SAM reduces fuel consumption and improves driving characteristics, claims Volvo.

‘Our hybrid solution for heavy vehicles is completely different from anything that has existed in the market to date. As a result of our volumes and resources, we have succeeded in developing a more standardized platform solution, which is a prerequisite for the hybrid technology’s ability to have a widespread commercial impact in the market for heavy vehicles,’ says Leif Johansson, president and CEO, Volvo Group.

Volvo will also soon be launching its new hybrid bus, the Volvo 7700 Hybrid, in Europe. Production of this hybrid bus, which will provide fuel savings of up to 30%, will start next year.
