Hyundai to launch small car by 2011

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Hyundai Motor India Ltd today said it is working on a new ‘mini car’ in the entry-level segment, which should hit the roads by 2011.

“We are developing a small car in the entry level range and it should hit the market by 2011,” HMIL Managing Director H S Lheem told reporters here. He, however, refused to divulge the details including the cost of the proposed car. A query, whether the HMIL’s small car was being planned to compete with the Tata ’s Nano , failed to elicit any response from the company officials, though sources said the target group for this product would be the same as Nano’s - two-wheeler users aspiring for a car.

Lheem further said the car would be manufactured from the company’s existing plant at Sriperumbudur, about 40 km from here. “We have adequate capacity to manufacture (the new car) in the plant. It’s capacity is about 6.5 lakh cars per annum and we are sure that it will accommodate,” Lheem, who was here to flag off the company’s ‘i20‘ range of cars, produced at the Sriperumbudur plant, to the European market, said.

Tata to Return Land to West Bengal State Government

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

The ruling Left Front indicated that Tata Motors should return the land at Singur to the West Bengal State government. They also indicated that the State government must take steps to promote and set up alternative industries on the land acquired by them.

According to the Left Front, Tata Motors has decided not to utilise the land for their much debated Nano project. Thus, the company should return the land to the state government so that alternative industries can be developed. Moreover, the land that cannot be returned to the farmers, it should be auctioned as per the Land Acquisition Act of India.

“We have asked the state government to go ahead in setting up alternative industries at Singur,” said Biman Bose, Left Front Chairman. “Talks are on in this regard. We are looking into all possibilities for setting up alternative industries at Singur,” reciprocated Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Chief Minister, the State of West Bengal.

Tata Motors had shut down the Nano plant amidst growing protests from the farmers in Singur who wanted their land to be returned to them. The protests were led by the Opposition party, Trinamool Congress, headed by Mamata Banerjee.

Tata Nano launch deferred to Jan-March 2009

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

With the Singur debacle, it was almost inevitable that the launch date for the Tata Nano would have to be pushed back by a couple of months. And indeed, it now seems certain that the Nano will miss its earlier launch deadline of November-December this year.

While Tata Motors is struggling to start production of the Nano at its Pantnagar plant (the aim being to produce around 48,000 units per annum from this plant in Uttarakhand), the launch is now likely to happen only in the January-March 2009 quarter.

Tata Motors has, reportedly, asked its vendors to be prepared for supplying components for only 3,500 - 4,000 Nanos on a monthly basis for now. The company, which wants to ensure continuous supply once the car is actually launched, is taking no chances on quality control and will prefer to defer the launch by 2 - 3 months rather than launch the car in a big hurry and then face problems later.

Farmers’ body moves HC against Tata Nano deal

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

A gandhinagar-based activist, representing the Rashtriya Kisan Dal, filed a Public Interest Litigation in the Gujarat High Court on Wednesday, seeking termination of the agreement signed between Tata Motors and the state Government for the Nano car plant at Sanand.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice K S Radhakrishnan and Aquil Qureshi, however, adjourned the matter for post-Diwali holidays, that is after November 9. The court asked petitioner H K Thakar to file the petition in English. The application submitted today was in Gujarati language and the Chief Justice, who belongs to Kerala, is not acquainted with the language.

The petition running into 14-pages, besides documents and evidences in support of the contention, also urged that no construction be allowed at the plant site in Chharodi village and no financial or subsidies be extended to the Tatas. It contended that big industries are not eligible for any kind of subsidy under the state government’s new industrial policy adopted a year ago.

The petitioner pointed out that the government’s decision to allot land to the Tatas at “throw-away prices” was in total violation of the rules and regulations. He said the land in question was acquired by the British government on a 90-year lease for agricultural purposes and for change of use, the government should have issued notices and given a chance to the original owners of the land to put forward their views on the issue. But it was directly allotted to the Tata Motors, thus “raising apprehension of some kind of scandal in the deal,” he said.
