The Japanese car maker, Nissan , will launch its super minicar, Nissan March in India by 2010. Tata Nano is slated for launch in early 2009. However, the full scale launch of Nano will be possible only in the second half 2009. In other words, the Singur fiasco has resulted in a boon for Nano competitors.
”The small, next-generation car ‘March’ will be launched in India by 2010 in the ‘A’ segment category. The car would be manufactured at the company’s plant situated at Oragadam in Tamil Nadu, though initially the car would be rolled out from the company’s Thailand facility followed by India,” said Shouhei Kimura, Managing Director, Nissan Motor India. ”We would have a total of nine Nissan models by the year 2012 in the Indian market and this car would be one of the new models,” he added.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL) is planning to boost its exports by about eight percent. In addition to making India its small car hub, Hyundai is also increasing the number of its R&D personnel in the country by four times and the company plans to start exporting engines from its Chennai plant in 2009.
‘In the first half, about 42 percent of our produce was exported to over 95 countries. But with the slowdown in the domestic industry, it is likely to increase up to 50 percent for the second half,’ said Heung Soo Lheem, MD and CEO, HMIL.
HMIL, which is currently celebrating its 10th Anniversary in India, will produce 530,000 units in this year, of which about 270,000 units will be exported. ‘From next year, we will increase our production capacity to 630,000 cars, including 20,000 CKD units, by starting a third shift,’ says Lheem.
HMIL currently exports Santro, Getz, i10 and Accent cars across the world. After the i20 is introduced in the Indian market, it will replace exports of the Getz. Meanwhile, HMIL will also start exporting CKD kits to Turkey and other Asian countries from 2009.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL) is looking at increasing exports to counter relatively sluggish sales in the domestic market. The company, which exported 127,000 cars last year, plans to start exports of ‘completely knocked down’ (CKD) kits of its cars.
H S Lheem, MD, HMIL, says the company will start its CKD exports by July 2009, and to begin with, about 30,000 kits will be exported per annum. At the same time, Hyundai India will also start work towards expanding its engine manufacturing capacity, taking it from the current 600,000 units per annum to 700,000 units.
HMIL will export 25,000 engines to Korea this year, which will be used by Hyundai’s sister company, Kia Motors. Next year, HMIL could be exporting up to 70,000 engines to Korea, all of which would be used by Kia.
HMIL is also looking at alternative fuels in a bigger way. With CNG-powered Santros and Accents already being sold in the domestic market, the company is now looking at launching LPG-powered variants of these cars - the LPG Santro by September this year, and the LPG Accent by October.

According to Hyundai Motor India, Senior Vice-President Arvind Saxena “This is our way of helping customers cope with increased fuel costs and to demonstrate that the hike translates into just Rs 2,700 additional fuel bills for a period of 6 months, given the fuel efficiency of a Santro or an i10″.
