The European ‘people’s car’, Volkswagen Beetle will hit the Indian roads next year. “Volkswagen is known as Beetle in India. We have studied the market and feel that there is space for Beetle. We are planning to make it available in the middle of this year through imports,” said VW spokesperson. Hence the car will be launched in the year 2009.
“We are now finalising the details and we think there is a small yet definite market for the Beetle in India. But do not expect it to be cheap,” said a VW spokesperson. VW plans to launch the 1.9 litre diesel variant in India.
Beetle is the iconic car for the company and will be imported in India as Completely Built Unit or CBU. This means it will attract 100% import duty and will be quite expensive. While the pricing still remains to be decided, Kurt Rippholz, VW spokesperson, said VW will position the car as a lifestyle car in the niche segment in India.

In India, the new Skoda Superb is likely to be offered with three engine options - 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol, 3.6-litre V6 petrol and a 2.0-litre turbodiesel, which could actually be the bestseller among the three. Skoda’s seven-speed DSG gearbox will also be a part of the package.
Pricing for the new Superb is yet to be announced, though we expect Skoda to price the car at around Rs 22-25 lakh, ex-showroom. Since it’s a much bigger car than either the Accord or the Camry, and is also quite high-tech, the Superb would be a brilliant deal at that price.
Ford Fusion shall be phased out soon from the Indian car market. The model has shown a decline in sales since past several months. The company plans to phase out the model owing to its poor sales performance. The model was launched in early 2004 but has received a very poor response from the Indian auto market.
“Every car launched is phased out over a certain period. Fusion is not doing well in a slowed down market. Hence, we will take a call at the right time,” said Michael Boneham, President, Ford India. He also added that the car will be phased out gradually and certainly not with immediate effect. “The model is selling, but the response is not as expected… But we do not have a fixed schedule by when that would happen,” he said.
He said that Ford plans to launch its small car by 2010 and will stick to its $500 million investments in India. “We would also roll out the proposed small car with both petrol and diesel variants in 2010,” he added. The company will double its assembly line capacity from 1 lakh unit to 2 lakh units and will also set up an engine manufacturing facility for 2.5 lakh units in Chennai.
