Yamaha to Launch FZ 150 in India Shortly

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

The Yamaha dealer in my city informed me that the company is soon going to launch Yamaha FZ 150 in India within a few months. The looks of the bike can be summed up in one word as ‘muscular’. While the YZF R15 poses a stylish and sporty outlook, FZ15 presents itself like a hunk. Like the R15, it has a mono suspension and a liquid cooled engine.

Yamaha is trying to grab a bigger market share by diluting the indian auto mobile market with too many models. In my opinion, there is nothing very special in this bike. This is just a revamped model of FZ1.

Just like the 1000cc YZF R1 was fitted with a 150cc engine and launched as YZF R15 , the 1000cc version of the FZ1 is being launched as a 150cc model. The problem with this kind of marketing strategy is that the original bike loses its value and no one would buy the higher end model even if they want to.

I am waiting to test drive the bike and post a review as soon as it gets launched. Hopefully the Indian biking industry is booming and the customers are more demanding than ever. We can expect a lot of new bike models to be launched in 2009. Hero Honda has also promised to launch 13 new models within end of the next year!

TVS TO LAUNCH APACHE RTR MENACE 180CC

Friday, August 29th, 2008

TVS is on prowl now. Sidelined by Bajaj and Hero Honda in the market, the company saw drop in revenues and sales during the last fiscal year. Wanting to make ammends now the company plans to launch new models of their existing portfolio in every three to six months starting with the Apache 160 RTR Fi launched just recently.

Next in line is the Apache RTR Menace which will come with a 180cc engine and unlike Bajaj which made a mistake by not visually differenciating the 150cc and 180cc Pulsar’s, the Apache Menace will come with some cosmetic upgrades too.The company reportedly is also working on 200cc version of the Apache and that might come in the market with ABS!

The Apache RTR Menace is expected to be launced during the festive season in October or November.

Two Arab investors interested in HUMMER

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

The HUMMER brand isn’t exactly sterling here in the States due to high fuel prices and its standing as the poster vehicle for green groups trying to save the environment from the evils of CO2 emissions. That’s probably the biggest reason GM is looking to offload the brand, and while it doesn’t seem likely that anyone would want the marque, there are interested parties.

According to GM’s Middle East Managing Director, Terry Johnsson, one group is a pair of Arab investors. The Middle East has been a player in the automotive landscape over the past few years, as the region is rife with cash and oil and has growing transportation needs. Arab investors were 50% of the Aston Martin sale in 2007, and Abu Dhabi’s investment group purchased 5% of Ferrari in 2005.

Hamann Tuning Kit for MINI Cooper S

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Hamann has released tuning and bodykits for the MINI Cooper S and the MINI Cooper D, which both have turbocharged motors, making it easier to tweak as compared to normally aspirated cars. There are 2 options for the Cooper S. One is a boost up to 204hp at 5,500rpm and 300Nm of torque between 1,600 to 5,000rpm.

The other is the SPORTKIT CS 230 which gives the Cooper S a massive power boost to 230 PS at 6,050rpm and 330Nm of torque at 3,860rpm, making it more powerful than the recently unveiled MINI John Cooper Works however it loses the amazingly flat torque curve. The Cooper D gets its power upped from 110hp to 136hp at 4,000rpm and a peak torque of 300Nm between 1,750 to 2,000rpm.

The Hamann bodykit is said to provide aerodynamic benefits and includes a front skirt, side sills and a rear diffuser which integrates the two tailpipes of the Hamann sports exhaust system. The Hamann suspension lowers the MINI’s center of gravity by 30mm. There is also a height-adjustable coilover kit which can be lowered up to 500mm.
