Car and two wheeler sales in India took a dip in the month of October. Although the companies had been eyeing the festive season to move their stocks and clear their inventories, but the ongoing economic scenario compelled the small car segment buyer away from the market. The auspicious day of “Dhanteras” marked sales of 15000 units across the country which was lesser than last year’s sales of 17000 units on the same day.
Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors have already reported a drop in sales in the month of October 2008. These two car manufacturers have stated that the market is seriously hurt by the rising interest rates and the overall credit crunch in the market. Maruti reported sale of 64,490 units in October 2008 as against 69,415 units last year.
On the other hand, the major two-wheeler manufacturers, Hero Honda, Bajaj and TVS Motors have also reported a decline in their sales in the month of October 2008. On the brighter side, the exports figures have lent a serious support to the sales figures of especially Bajaj and TVS Motors.

India’s third-largest two-wheeler manufacturer, TVS Motor Company Ltd. is scaling down its investment plans in India, owing to weaker demand and tight availability of consumer finance.
TVS, which was earlier planning to invest about Rs 1 billion per annum on expansion, will now only invest about Rs 750 million per year for the next two years. ‘We have seen low growth and will only invest for new models and R&D projects now,’ said Venu Srinivasan, Chairman and Managing Director, TVS Motor. ‘There is no significant investment in capacity. Given the turbulent conditions, we would trim our investments,’ he added.
TVS Motor had recorded a 19 percent increase in total two-wheeler sales in September this year, but the company expects growth to slow down in the near future, primarily due to lack of availability of finance. ‘We don’t expect improvements till the end of 2009, as the global economy is slowing down. The crisis in the west is affecting us here, nobody is really willing to lend,’ said Srinivasan.
TVS has reported a 19% growth in the sales of its two-wheelers in September 2008, at 137,246 units, versus 115,091 units in the year ago period.
During the month, the company’s motorcycle sales went up by 32% at 71,278 units, compared to 53,991 units recorded in September last year. TVS also exported 18,229 units in September this year, against 13,036 units in the corresponding period last year, an increase of almost 40%.

TVS is on prowl now. Sidelined by Bajaj and Hero Honda in the market, the company saw drop in revenues and sales during the last fiscal year. Wanting to make ammends now the company plans to launch new models of their existing portfolio in every three to six months starting with the Apache 160 RTR Fi launched just recently.
Next in line is the Apache RTR Menace which will come with a 180cc engine and unlike Bajaj which made a mistake by not visually differenciating the 150cc and 180cc Pulsar’s, the Apache Menace will come with some cosmetic upgrades too.The company reportedly is also working on 200cc version of the Apache and that might come in the market with ABS!
The Apache RTR Menace is expected to be launced during the festive season in October or November.

TVS recently rolled out the onemillionth Scooty Pep scooterette out of its Mysore plant. While its predecessor, the 60cc TVS Scooty took all of eleven years to accomplish this feat, its four-stroke cousin has managed to reach the mark in six years of production.
The timing of the launch of the Scooty Pep in 2002 could not have been better. Its predecessor, the 60cc two-stroke TVS Scooty, was on the waning side of its life cycle in a market moving rapidly towards 4-stroke machines. Six years down the line, the product has hit the golden mark in automotive production - ten lakh Scooty Peps produced and running errands on Indian roads.
TVS is also going to launch a face lifted scooty in future and has named it Scooty Streak . It will hit the showrooms during the festive season. Along with the scooty streak, TVS plans to launch a new scooter early 2009. TVS scooty streak will be priced around Rs40000. Scooty streak will be the TVS answer to Honda’s Aviator , Suzuki’s access and Kinetic’s flyte.
